Making Health Equal: Getting inequalities on the front page

Health inequalities shape almost every story we cover yet getting them to cut through can be a real challenge. On March 19th, the MJA is teaming up with Health Equals to tackle exactly that.

Join journalists, communications leads, charities and campaigners for an afternoon of practical discussion and networking focused on one key question: how do we change the narrative — and make these stories land?

Following last year’s successful MJA Symposium on health inequalities, this free in-person event will explore how to spot overlooked angles, understand what news desks are prioritising, and turn strong evidence into headlines.

MJA members are invited from 2.45pm on Thursday 19 March at The Health Foundation, London, for:

  • A Q&A panel discussion
  • The presentation of embargoed research
  • Insight into emerging issues coming down the track

The afternoon will be followed by a drinks reception at 4.30pm.

MJA vice-chair Emma Wilkinson will chair a panel on what journalists are really looking for, the current hot topics in health, and how to get inequalities coverage beyond the specialist pages and onto the front page.

“Every story we write has an element of health inequality to it but making that angle cut through isn’t always easy. As much as we want to highlight these issues, comms teams need to understand what makes a health story genuinely attention-grabbing and what news desks care about,” Emma says.

“We’re really excited to be working with Health Equals on this event, giving our members the inside track on what’s coming up, and providing insight into how to deliver compelling inequalities stories that are impossible to ignore.”

Places are limited. Secure your free ticket HERE or via the Eventbrite link below.

Please note: while the wider event begins at 11.45am, journalists are invited to attend from 2.45pm. Please click the ‘journalist’ ticket when booking. Further details about the embargoed research will be shared with those who register.
