Clare Wilson joins the MJA EC

It was a mix of good news and bad at the Annual General Meeting on January 21 — but the important take-home message is that we are starting 2025 in a very positive position.

In his report, MJA chair Shaun outlined what has been a “challenging” period, but stressed we are now in a far better financial position.

Treasurer Sarah Commery presented audited accounts to the end of January 2024 which show a deficit at that point, but she stressed that this does not reflect the current situation as we now have reserves of £20,000. Details of sponsorship income and honoraria for 2024 are available in Key Documents (under About) for members who are signed in to the website.

New MJA administrator Rosalie Smith

Another challenge has been the decision of our long-standing administrator Sallie Robins to stand down.

Finding someone to fill Sallie’s shoes has not been easy, but Shaun was pleased to announce the appointment of Rosalie Smith as our new administrator. He also asked members to exercise patience as she gets to grips with the role.

In recognition of Sallie’s amazing efforts in support of the MJA, outgoing Vice Chair, Jane Symons proposed Sallie be made an honorary associate member. This was seconded by Shaun and passed unanimously.

Nigel Praities has also stepped down after seven years on the Executive Committee, including two as Chair (2021-2023) as has Aasma Day, who joined the EC in 2022.

Jane Symons has stepped down as an MJA vice chair after 12 years in the role, but will remain on the EC. She will also continue to manage our ageing (but hopefully to be updated this year) website and work on sponsorship.

Clare Wilson, science writer from the i paper kindly agreed to be co-opted to the EC and she and the other members were re-elected unanimously — click here for details of the current EC. The AGM also thanked and re-appointed honorary auditors Jenny Bryan and Olivia Timbs.

At the associated EC meeting, Shaun and Emma Wilkson were reappointed as chair and vice chair respectively (there is currently a vacancy for a second vice chair).
