Isla Whitcroft has agreed to become a Vice Chair of the MJA, an appointment which was unanimously confirmed at our Executive Committee meeting on April 2. Jennifer Richardson of the BMJ was also co-opted to the EC by a unanimous vote.

The timeline and other details around the awards were also agreed by those EC members eligible to vote. (In fairness to EC members who wish to enter, these members declare their interest and have no involvement in the process.)

Fantastic work

Following her appointment, Isla said, “I am delighted and honoured to have been elected to serve as Vice Chair of the Medical Journalists’ Association. Having been a member of the MJA for over fifteen years including six years on the Executive Committee, I am well aware of the fantastic work our Association does to support those working in this fast moving, exciting and often challenging area of journalism and I am greatly looking forward to contributing further to this vital professional resource.

“I am aware of course, that I am stepping into the very big boots of my predecessor, the amazing Jane Symons to whom we all owe a huge vote of thanks for her incredible – and often unsung – contribution to the MJA as VC over many, many years.

Busy schedule

“The Chair has asked me to focus, in part, on supporting the terrific current members of our Executive Committee, who work so tirelessly and under the radar to ensure that our busy schedule of interesting and highly regarded events continue throughout the year, and I am excited to start work on this brief.

“In addition, I will continue to be involved with the organisation of MJA events and supporting the Chair by getting generally stuck in to many of the myriad tasks that go on behind the scenes to keep our MJA as vibrant and thriving as it is today.

“Finally, as VC I hope I can help to make the MJA even better – and definitely to have some fun whilst doing it!”
