In 2024, Roche sponsored the Gordon McVie Award for reporting cancer research, an award they also supported in 2023 and 2022 when it was first introduced.
In 2024 the award was presented to Alice Klein for her work in New Scientist: Bugging Cancer. The judges said: We loved this, the combination of historical elements, the latest research in the field and a patient story. The topic was something new to judges and well-handled. Klein made what could have been heavy science into an accessible, interesting and engaging story.
Alice Klein could not be at the awards and her award was collected by her colleague Alison George, New Scientist.
Roche corporate communications partners Alexandra Hicks and Jude Amos — who presented the Gordon McVie Award for Reporting Cancer Research — spoke after the ceremony on the importance of the Medical Journalists’ Association Awards
Roche has supported the MJA Awards for more than a decade. Chris Saunders, Corporate Communications Lead, said: “We are proud to have supported the MJA Awards over the years. Journalists play a vital role in ensuring that our national conversation about healthcare is balanced, informative and human. In a world where facts and context can sometimes be lost amongst the noise, journalistic excellence is more important than ever before.”
