Congratulations to MJA members Zoe Tidman, Hannah Geissler, Joe Pinkstone and Michael Searles who have been named in the 2024 Press 30 under 30 Awards.

The awards celebrate the next generation of early-career journalists who already making a big impact with their work.

Zoe Tidman, estates correspondent at the Health Services Journal was praised for the way she used data analysis and FOI requests to reveal the NHS is still waiting for more than £1 billion in capital funding announced five years ago, a story that gained wide attention.

Judges commented, “Excellent beat reporting for a trade publication, holding the government to account with public interest stories rooted in dogged investigation. Zoe’s job is to challenge those in charge and she does it to great effect.”

Versatility

Express health editor, Hannah Geissler was applauded for “versatility and powerful storytelling”, with judges describing her journalism as “fearless and compassionate”.

They commented: “Hanna understands her audience, taps into their concerns, and is willing to campaign on their behalf. Fantastic reporting from Turkey. The story shows compassion but also covers news from a disaster zone, which is very brave.”

Telegraph health correspondent Michael Searles was recognised for his “agenda-setting exclusives and thorough investigations”.

Determination

The judges said: “Michael has shown an emphatic determination to tackle very contentious issues and report them in a responsible and accurate manner. He has a very forthright writing style, which enables him to express the key points of the story.”

While his colleague, Joe Pinkstone, the Telegraph’s science correspondent, won plaudits for his “passion for science and a talent for making complex stories accessible”.

Judges commented: “Joe has already broken some big stories that have clearly boosted readership. It’s clear that he can cover a wide range of topics, regardless of how contentious they are.”
