Our Christmas quiz is always special, and this year was no different, thanks to a brilliant team effort from quiz-master Danny Buckland, our administrator-extraordinaire Sallie Robins, an amazing musical round from Robert Mitchell Thain and a pun-tastic missing headlines interlude from Isla Whitcroft.
Quiz Whitties win
And, of course, there was another winning team — the Quiz Whitties — making it two victories on the trot for the British Medical Journal. The quick-witted Whitties — Elisabeth Mahase, Abi Rimmer, Caroline White, Ingrid Torjesen, Jennifer Richardson and Tom Moberly — clinched victory by playing their joker on the final music round, taking their score to 39.5.
Nightingales and Bubbles
Joint runners up were the Silent Nightingales – the HSJ’s Sharon Brennan, David West, Tom Norton, Lawrence Dunhill, Nick Kituno and Matt Discombe – who took an early lead and held it until the final hurdle; and the Extended Bubbles, media and medical all-stars – Nicola Hill, Aasma Day, Jane Symons and Drs David Oliver and Alan Maryon-Davis, who both finished with 31 points.
The Nightingale’s Sharon Brennan took the prize for the best cocktail: the Sahin sling; a timely homage to the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine, developed by Ugur Sahin and his wife Oezlem Tuereci – a classic martini served with a syringe and sugar cube (a la the Salk polio vaccine) on the side.
