Bowled over

What do you get a professor who has everything you need to know about statistics?

That was the challenge the MJA EC faced when trying to find an appropriate ‘trophy’ to present to Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, the latest recipient of the MJA Lifetime Achievement Achievement — given in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the advancement of communication in science and medicine.

After ruling out an abacus, we turned to master wood-turner Andy Coates, who produced this beautiful burr oak bowl with a (lead-free) pewter rim and foot.

And we were thrilled when David emailed to say how much he enjoyed the evening and this was an award he would “treasure”.

Thank you to Andy for creating such a beautiful piece — you can see more of his work here — and to O’Connells Engravers for adding our dedication. (Who knew that engraving such a curved surface was such an art?).
