The MJA is the largest membership organisation for health and medical journalists in the UK and two new members are a testament to the depth and breadth of talent within our ranks.

New MJA member, award-winning freelancer Lisa Nainggolan

Lisa Nainggolan is a freelance medical journalist and editor, who most recently worked for Medscape by WebMD. She covered the diabetes and endocrinology beat there for the past 10 years, writing for a doctor audience, as well as adapting this content and writing stories for their consumer sister site, WebMD, as well as for Medscape UK. Prior to this she worked as a senior reporter on theheart.org/Medscape Cardiology for 12 years.

Lisa has a degree in physiology and started her career at the National Poisons Information Centre at Guys Hospital, before moving into journalism as a science writer and then editor on Scrip World Pharmaceutical News.

Awards

She has won four  healthcare journalism prizes during her career: most recently, in 2019, in the Digital Health Media Fall awards for a feature on transgender children: “It’s Complicated: Docs Say Gender Questioning Kids Need Better Science.”

Asif Qasim an interventional cardiologist, serial entrepreneur and medical journalist

Asif Qaism is a man of many talents. He is the founder & CEO MedShr — the world’s leading clinical case discussion network —  an interventional cardiologist, medical journalist, angel investor, board advisor, and aspiring tennis player.

Since is founded MedShr in 2015 it has grown to a membership of more 2.5 million members in 190 countries. He is an interventional cardiologist with NHS and private practice in London. An angel investor in media, publishing, film and technology, Asif mentors startup Founders and clinical entrepreneurs, and is also a board advisor to a number of early stage companies.

He studied Medicine at Cambridge University with an Open Scholarship to Trinity College, rowing in the 1st VIII, playing 1st XI cricket and hockey, and received academic prizes and awards. He returned to Cambridge for a PhD and was a visiting fellow at Yale. He completed his interventional training with a prestigious fellowship in Milan.

Research

He remains active in research and is a faculty member for major international cardiology congresses. Asif has held NHS Clinical Director roles, improving the quality of care for patients in acute and community services.

Asif describes himself as a serial entrepreneur who launched a pre-Facebook online network for sport and exercise. Asif developed MedShr to enable doctors to share and discuss clinical cases using an app that protects patient privacy and confidentiality.

Launched from the Founders Factory Accelerator just nine years ago, MedShr has grown rapidly to become the world’s leading network for doctors, winning awards including Facebook Social Good App of the Year 2016 and United Nations World Summit Award 2017.

MedShr works in partnership with hundreds of national and specialist medical societies, and supports education for doctors and healthcare professionals around the world and recently won the King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation.
