There was a standing ovation as Emily Morgan was posthumously named Editor of the Year at the 2023 MJA Awards.
Emily, an immensely talented broadcaster, died of lung cancer earlier this year, aged just 45. She was nominated by her friend and colleague, Louisa Felton, ITV News specialist producer.
In an emotional ceremony, the award was presented by former MJA Chair Lawrence McGinty who knew Emily well, and it was accepted by Emily’s husband, Rob Kinnaird who spoke of his pride in her achievements, and also Emily’s immense kindness.
Di Ridley, Head of Newsgathering at ITV also gave thanks to Emily’s talents and teamwork, and spoke of the deep loss felt by all who worked with her.
Exemplary
Three pieces were submitted on Emily’s behalf and the judges said, “They show a health editor at the top of her game in British broadcasting. They demonstrate exemplary reporting and a a dextrous grasp of a complicated beat.
“She got to the heart of the story and knew how best to make sure viewers would understand the nuances.
“With a compelling use of interviews across the health chessboard, she had an ability to achieve instant rapport driven by compassion and empathy.”
In an unprecedented decision, there was no shortlist for the award as the judges felt it was impossible to decide between the rest of the incredibly talented field of entrants.
