Alongside our renowned MJA Awards, key events include the Annual Lecture, provided by a leading figure from the UK health sector, and our Symposium where clinicians, researchers, policy makers and journalists discuss hot topics in health and medicine. We also host exclusive news briefings, webinars to support career development and social networking events. This exciting and vibrant programme advances our core mission of informing, supporting and championing our members.

Annual Lecture

The Annual MJA Lecture provides a unique opportunity to hear from a leading figure in health and science and to take part in a Q&A session followed by networking and drinks. Previous speakers include health secretary Wes Streeting, NHS England chief Sir Jim Mackey and in 2026, chief medical officer Professor Sir Chris Whitty.

Symposium

The MJA’s Annual Symposium is a must-attend event, with members joining doctors, researchers and policy experts to discuss key topics in health. This year’s Symposium at The King’s Fund on 17th June was on Maternity Safety, Inequality and Culture with a keynote speech from National Maternity Adviser Michelle Welsh MP. It led to coverage across national and specialist press.

The Annual Lecture

One of the standout dates in the MJA calendar, our Annual Lecture attracts some of the most influential voices in healthcare and public policy. Each year it sparks national media coverage, lively debate and valuable insight into the issues shaping medicine today. It is an unrivalled chance to hear directly from major decision-makers while connecting with colleagues across journalism, healthcare and communications.

Symposium

Our Symposium brings together clinicians, researchers, policy makers, charities, patients and journalists to discuss hot topics in medicine and health.

This year partnered with The King’s Fund for a Symposium on Maternity Safety, Inequality and Culture.

New national maternity advisor Michelle Welsh MP gave a moving keynote speech covered in national and specialist media. The packed programme also featured exclusive new research from the Nuffield Trust alongside presentations from leading policymakers, campaigners and academics.

Thanks to invaluable support from Leigh Day and Blue Lozenge ensuring the event was free to MJA members.

Our previously highly successful events have covered reporting after a pandemic, investigating a scandal and whistleblowing.

In 2025, we teamed up with the Health Foundation for a Symposium on Health Inequalities, which included exclusive research presented by the UK Health Security Agency.
