The Mail on Sunday is looking for a health reporter. This is a full time position, based at their London office.

Job Introduction

The Mail on Sunday’s Health department is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated reporter to join their award-winning team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a year or two of reporting experience, preferably with a special interest in health and medical issues.

The job could suit an entry-level candidate who is ready to make the leap into a demanding role, or a candidate with experience in newspaper reporting who wishes to expand their experience and make a name specialising in health as part of a national newspaper team. A background in health journalism is preferred – but more essential is a strong interest in the subject, and all the possibilities it presents in terms of stories.

Main Responsibilities

  • Pitching story ideas to the Health Editors weekly, with a view to producing at least one or two stories every week.
  • Taking ownership of the Health section’s weekly news page which reports the latest innovative drugs or operations to combat common conditions affecting the Mail on Sunday’s health-conscious readership.
  • Managing readers’ letters to our columnist, Dr Ellie Cannon – and having a beady eye for something that could lead to a bigger story.
  • Writing tight, clean copy to weekly deadlines in simple language, accessible to the MoS reader.
  • Working with stringers and freelancers on medical news stories, and making connections with experts in a wide variety of health fields, from public health, and Government policy, to research science, drug development, surgery, medicine, nutrition and beyond.

 

Person Specification

  • Strong interest in health/medical issues
  • A background in health journalism preferred but not essential
  • Excellent standards of written English
  • Ability to write quickly and accurately
  • Highly motivated
  • Able to write to tight deadlines
