The Times seeks health reporter

The Times is looking for a health reporter to join our health editor in covering one of the most important beats in journalism.

Applicants should have experience writing for a national newspaper, magazine or news website, be brimming with ideas and have a track record of delivering exclusives.

You will ideally have a background in health or science and an insatiable appetite for news. The successful candidate will also be capable of breaking down complex scientific papers into accurate engaging news stories, have a keen eye for detail and be a meticulous fact-checker.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently deliver accurate, engaging copy to strict deadlines
  • Pitch agenda-setting exclusive story ideas to the section editor
  • Monitor on-diary releases, events and press conferences on the patch and assist the health editor in planning coverage
  • Work with the health editor on big projects, campaigns and interviews
  • Build and maintain excellent contacts in health
  • Be a self-starter and pitch strong ideas across print and digital
  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote Times health content
  • Work collaboratively with other sections across the paper, particularly digital and graphics, to ensure the best presentation of stories on our digital platforms.

Skills and experience

  • A background in health coverage and a demonstrable interest in the topic
  • Experience writing for a national newspaper, magazine or news website
  • Ability to spot a story of interest to Times readers
  • Tenacity and persistence in getting the story
  • Keen attention to detail and meticulous fact-checking
  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Unflappable and reliable under pressure
  • An understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
